Halloween 1976........-KT |
It was a common event where we would sneak into the church late at night to hang out and wait for something weird to happen. This was not difficult, since I played guitar in the youth group and was responsible for locking up the doors after we were done for the night. I would walk around locking up all but that one door upstairs, which led to the outside balcony stairs. This night was no different.
On this particular Halloween night it was the usual suspects, Rusty, Wayne, Scott & Vivian, who had an on again off again volatile relationship, Bev, Lynn and I. My job was to climb the balcony stairs, enter the unlocked door, proceed through the church and unlock the downstairs door to let the rest in. I figured this time I would take Lynn with me just for grins. The only way you could see inside the church was by the streetlight just outside the front window, which let in just enough light so you wouldn’t run into things in the way. We made our way up the balcony, through the upstairs Sunday school room and down to the back door to unlock it without incident, Lynn crushing my hand the whole way.
The crowd piled in out of the cold and found places to sit and chat in the big room on the first floor. We settled in and began to reminisce about all the times this building had scared the living joo-joos out of us. As we were talking and questioning our own memories about the different experiences, and really starting to doubt that anything had ever happened, chalking it up to active imaginations, we all heard a noise as if something had just rolled across the floor in the next room, which was the Pastor’s office. It sounded like something extremely heavy, like a safe, had rolled from one end of the office to the other. We all stared at each other and Vivian asked, ‘Did you guys hear that?’. We all nodded and got up to go investigate the noise. It was then that we noticed that the Pastor’s chair had moved from a position of under the desk to one in the middle of the floor. This pretty much freaked the girls out and to be honest the guys didn’t look much better. We looked at each other again in wonder of what to do, so Rusty went in and moved the chair back under the desk. He said he could feel resistance as he did it, though, and a cold chill ran up his arms.
We all returned to the big room where Lynn, Bev and I took a seat on a long table, like a lunchroom table, and the others just stood in front of us to discuss the incident. Again, our talk returned to our belief that we were probably just imagining all of this and that things really never happened the way we had thought. Scott had the floor, so to speak, and was being the most vocal about his doubts when suddenly it sounded like footsteps banging right up behind him. And we could SEE that no one was actually there! This seemed to grab every ones attention and a mass exodus began to occur. Every body headed for the door except Lynn and I. The only reason Lynn didn’t take off like a Banshee, was because I had my arm around her leg and I wanted to stay just a bit more to try to figure out what the heck that noise was. We sat there in silence for a second or two before we both realized that something was breathing heavily right in front of us. We could even smell the foul breath! I looked out the window to my left and all I could see was the backs of all our buddies heading down the gravel road at a rapid rate. Suddenly Lynn tore out of my iron grip and soon became the next one down the road. The only thing I remember next is the back door slamming against my back as I was about to win the race to Scott’s house!
This is a true story! |

I have experienced similar kinds of this type of encounter myself.. only, I did not run, I stood there and faced whatever it was that, at that time I could not see, but just 'knew' it was there. I believe you. |

That was brave, but I got the distinct impression that Dogbreath wasn't interested in chatting over tea and crumpets. The 'get the H*** outta here' flag was definitely raised. -KT |

Yeah, Xy, a local church built around the turn of the 20th century. We hung out there quite often and we would hear and see things on a regular basis. That is until one day they installed aluminum siding and we never heard another thing! That was weird, too. -KT |

Cool story, But I would have stayed to figure out what the noise really was. I guess that I am just really into stuff like that andd I would really like to know the whole truth about what is truthfully going on. I love stories that make you wonder though. Thanks for sharing. It was a great srory. |

Wow, yet another brave soul. I guess I just have a little trouble facing the totally unknown alone, especially at 17 years old. -KT |

That one creeps me out. I get creeped out just when the outside street slight shines in a Church window. I hate that picture.
Did you ever have any reprocussions from that night?
Good creepy story. |

No, FG. We would always regroup, conquer our fear a bit and return. Besides, I knew I had to lock up both doors before I completely left. We always went back for more! We loved it! -KT |
